Description
A back-lit macro print of a core sample of ice from the Amery Ice Shelf. The ice is some 400,000 years old and taken from approximately 4km below the surface. I began studying these ice samples on a residency in Colorado in 2019 and continued research at the UTAS facility in Hobart. We developed a technique using cross-polarizing filters to produce the colours seen representing the ice crystal facets. As the ice samples are about the size of a playing card, macro photography was used to take around 30 shots and knit them together digitally to produce these large scale prints.
